Parking and access
The container and the delivery truck need space, as close to the building as possible.
- Move the cars out of the driveway and the garage the day before. Once the container is in place, they will not get out.
- Ask us where we plan to drop the container.
- If the container or the truck has to occupy the street or the sidewalk, ask us whether the borough needs to authorize it, and who handles it.
The neighbours
A roof is rarely redone without noise or dust. Warn your neighbours a few days ahead, with the planned dates.
In Montreal, many buildings touch. On a row plex or a semi-detached building, we may need to go through the neighbour's property, set a ladder on their land or protect their yard. Ask their permission first rather than apologizing afterward.
The attic and the inside
Tear-off drops dust and debris between the decking boards. If you store things in the attic, cover them with a tarp or old sheets, or bring the fragile items down.
Hammer blows make the whole house vibrate. On the upper floors:
- take frames and mirrors off the walls
- remove fragile objects from the shelves
The deck, the yard and the grounds
Debris falls around the house, despite the protective tarps. Clear a strip a few metres wide at the foot of the walls.
- Bring in the patio furniture, the barbecue, the bikes and the toys.
- Move the flower pots and point out the flower beds you care about.
- Mow the lawn before the job. Nails are easier to pick up in short grass.
If there is a deck built on the roof, it will have to be taken apart before the work. Ask us ahead of time who takes care of it and whether putting it back is included in the price.
Children and pets
A roofing job is no place to play. Keep children inside or away from the house during working hours.
Constant noise stresses many dogs and cats. If your pet is nervous, have it looked after elsewhere for the length of the work. Do not let your pet out alone in the yard until the grounds have been cleaned. Nails can remain.
Frequently asked questions
Who should warn the neighbours, me or the roofer?
Warning the neighbours is first your job. If we need to go on another property, get the neighbour's agreement before the job starts.
What if my air conditioner is on the roof or at the foot of a wall?
Point it out during the quote visit. A unit on the ground is protected with a panel. A unit installed on the roof may need to be lifted or disconnected, sometimes by another specialist.
Can I use the front door during the work?
Yes, the front door stays usable, with care. Ask us which side the debris falls on and give a heads-up before going out.
