What a shingle is made of
All modern asphalt shingles are built the same way. A fibreglass mat at the centre gives the shingle its strength. The mat is coated with asphalt, which makes it waterproof. The top is covered with coloured stone granules that protect the asphalt from the sun and give the colour.
The families differ in the amount of material, the number of layers and the cut. These differences weigh in the choice of roofing for a shingle roof, but they never replace good installation.
The three-tab shingle
The three-tab shingle is the classic shingle on bungalows of past decades. It is a single layer cut into three equal tabs. Once installed, it gives a flat, even finish with straight lines.
A three-tab shingle is thin and light. It costs less to buy, but it stands up less well to wind and ages faster. It is still used to repair an existing roof of the same type or to cover an outbuilding.
The architectural shingle
The architectural shingle is also called a laminated shingle. It is made of two layers bonded at the factory, with an irregular cut that creates relief and shadow. The roof looks thicker and less uniform.
An architectural shingle is heavier and stiffer than a three-tab. That weight and stiffness help it stay put in high winds. Its texture hides small unevenness in the decking. Roofers often offer this family by default.
The premium shingle
This family groups even thicker shingles, often in a large format, designed to look like slate or cedar shakes. It also includes shingles built to better resist hail impact.
Their thickness gives strong relief and, in general, better wind resistance. In return, they cost more and weigh more. Installing them takes more care, especially in the valleys and at the ridge. Premium shingles make the most sense on a roof that is highly visible from the street.
What counts when you choose
The shingle family is only part of the decision. When you compare two quotes, also look at these points.
- The exact product line. Each manufacturer offers several lines within the same family. Ask for the name of the line in writing to compare equivalent products.
- The warranty. Read what it really covers, for how long at full value, and under what installation conditions.
- The accessories. Starter strip, ridge caps, underlayment and eave membrane are part of the system. Some warranties require them to come from the same manufacturer.
- The roof slope. Manufacturers set a minimum slope for their shingles. On a low-pitched slope, we have to follow special installation instructions or propose something else.
Frequently asked questions
What type of shingle lasts the longest?
With equal installation, a thicker shingle generally lasts longer than a thin one. Asphalt shingles still last in the range of 15 to 30 years, depending on the manufacturer and the quality of installation. Attic ventilation matters as much as the product line.
Can you mix two types of shingles on the same roof?
For a repair, it is best to install the same type as the one already in place. An architectural shingle set into a three-tab roof does not line up with its neighbours and shows from far away. Installing another type on a full slope is possible, but the difference in appearance will remain.
Are all asphalt shingles covered by the same warranty?
No, asphalt shingles are not all covered the same way. The length, the coverage in the first years and the conditions vary from one manufacturer and product line to another. The manufacturer's warranty covers the product. Installation falls under the workmanship warranty. Ask us to write it in the quote, with its length.
