Why insulation belongs in a roofing project
A roof replacement is the right time to insulate. On a flat roof, the insulation goes under the new membrane. On a pitched roof, it is the moment to correct the insulation and ventilation of the attic. These two programs are the only roofing grants open to single-family houses.
Rénoclimat pays $50 to $1,500 for the roof
The Government of Quebec lists help of $50 to $1,500 for insulating an attic, a cathedral ceiling or a flat roof. The amount depends on three things:
- the percentage of the area insulated
- the insulation value before the work
- the insulation value after the work
The work must cover at least 20% of the total roof area. The final insulation value must reach the program's targets, which appear in your home's evaluation report.
Who can take part in Rénoclimat
The program is for owners of single-family houses, duplexes, triplexes and small residential buildings. For a multi-unit building, the limit is 3 storeys above ground and 600 square metres of ground area.
In a condominium, the evaluation covers the whole building. Registration is in the syndicate's name, and the syndicate receives the help.
The steps
- Ask for an energy evaluation before starting the work.
- Have the work done.
- Ask for the post-work evaluation.
Both evaluations are mandatory. The government says to allow 8 to 10 weeks after the second one to receive the cheque.
Tell us about Rénoclimat before you sign. We need to know which insulation value to aim for so the work qualifies for the help.
LogisVert, from Hydro-Québec
Hydro-Québec lists a $1,500 grant for the "roof insulation and caulking" measure. The program is open to owners and tenants alike, and you apply on the LogisVert portal.
Hydro-Québec adds 5% to the total amount when several measures are submitted in the same application.
The detailed conditions of this measure are not repeated here. Read them on Hydro-Québec's website before planning your work. Hydro-Québec also states that it does no phone or door-to-door solicitation for this program.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Hydro-Québec grant for roof insulation?
The LogisVert program lists $1,500 for roof insulation and caulking. The conditions are on Hydro-Québec's website, and the application goes through the program portal.
Does Rénoclimat pay for a new roof?
No, Rénoclimat does not pay for a new roof. The help covers improved insulation, not the covering. Changing the membrane or the shingles without improving the insulation gives you nothing.
Can I get Rénoclimat and LogisVert for the same work?
The pages we consulted do not say whether Rénoclimat and LogisVert can be combined for the same work. Ask both programs before you start. Rénoclimat requires an evaluation before the work.
