A few shingles or the whole roof
The City gives two examples of permit-free work on a sloped roof in LaSalle, repairing the covering and replacing a few shingles. A roof repair in LaSalle after a storm is often limited to those two jobs.
A permit is required in three situations.
- replacing the covering of the sloped roof
- changing the roof structure
- touching the insulation or structure during a repair
Between "a few shingles" and "the covering", the City draws no line in numbers. If your work falls in between, describe it to the permit counter before you sign.
Materials LaSalle accepts
To install or replace the covering of a sloped roof, the City requires one of these new materials.
- slate
- clay tile
- wood shingle
- copper sheet
- asphalt shingle
- pre-enamelled roofing sheet metal
- non-corrugated concrete tile
- tar and gravel
- elastomeric membrane
- thermoplastic polyolefin membrane
The City page says nothing about shingle colour in LaSalle. It also says nothing about a material missing from the list, such as another type of sheet metal. For a product not on the list, check with the permit counter before ordering.
Oddly enough, the sloped roof list includes tar and gravel and two membranes. The City gives the same list for flat roofs under 300 m².
In its fees section, the City also notes that extra fees may apply if the building or its area has heritage value or is subject to special architectural standards. The counter can confirm whether your address is affected.
A data sheet, even for shingles
Among the documents required for a sloped roof in LaSalle, the City lists a materials technical data sheet showing the solar reflectance index. Yet this page gives no reflectance threshold for sloped roofs.
Ask us for the manufacturer's data sheet for the proposed shingle, and attach it to the application. The other documents are the quote with taxes, the certificate of location, the building record (fiche-bâtiment) and any other document useful to the review.
What the permit costs
Review fees are $9.80 per $1,000 of work, according to the City. For a house or a strictly residential building, the minimum is $167.40. The fees are non-refundable.
Checking your roof without climbing it
A sloped roof is looked at from the ground or from an upstairs window. Stay off the roof and off the ladder.
From below, you can note:
- missing, lifted or curled shingles
- granules piling up at the bottom of the downspouts
- a stain on the upstairs ceiling
Take photos, then ask us for a quote. We do the inspection up top.
